Fashion Critiques for 2012

Functionality not lost, designers like Paul Smith, Simon Carter, and Richard James have brought wallets out of the dark and into the light. Vivid colours embossed on their covers and linings with depictions of comic cartoon strips started appearing, even bikini clad women and mini minors. Now here is a very interesting fact about the evolution of style and progress of fashion: Thomas Burberry opened his own business in 1856 in Basingstoake, Hampshire. His commitment to both form and function in apparel design has been significant throughout the development of the company and its products. Noticing how local shepherds and farmers wore linen smocks, which were cool in summer and warm in the winter, he attempted to apply the same principles to other clothing. In 1879 he developed a fabric which was weather proofed in the yarn before weaving, using a secret process and then proofed again in the piece, using the same undisclosed formula. The new material was untearable and weatherproof, whilst cool and breathable. He called the cloth ‘gabardine’ and registered the word as a trademark. “Toast and marmalade for tea, sailing ships upon the sea aren’t lovelier than you”. What a cheerful little song; Recorded by unknown band Tin Tin and produced by the late Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. And when you’re ready to don the shirt and tie, try a pair of honey coloured cats eye cufflinks from Veritas Gifts. One gentleman decided to match them with an abstract floral tie by Patrick McMurray. “Nice colours for spring” Barry Gibb the elder of four brothers and leader of the Bee Gees became the second most prolific songwriter/producer in history. He sold close to 400 million records. Swarovski Crystals, the choice material of world class jewellery designers. A sense of luxury is extended through sterling silver and enamels creating forms reflecting beautifully, textural influences at every angle. Natural light suddenly becomes part of the experience as it bounces off every facet of Swarovski Crystal The cat walks are a blaze with checks and floral. Soon to be conservatively watered down for the high street stores and, no doubt they’ll all look pretty much the same, it’s just another name. Certain styles are never far from the fashion cycle, like tweed, checks, floral, they just go into orbit for a while and then coming crashing back to earth. Westwood realised the longevity in Tartan. For many years she has used its patterns and colours wisely, more recently in some great looking totes. Here is a brand that’s on the up; she’s made all the right moves and a name befitting a jeweller, or exotic dancer. Babette Wasserman, a lover of the Swarovski Crystal, she displays it maximisation style and sets her place as a cufflink designer amongst men. Women bring a refreshing slant to men’s accessories, a little femininity firmed to cuff, a constant reminder of soft and inviting contours and sweet scented women. Like the cufflinks, like the woman. 1860 Bertie, the rakish Prince of Wales, ordered a short smoking jacket to wear at informal dinner parties at Sandringham from his friend, the tailor, Henry Poole. It was the first dinner jacket on record and was cut in midnight blue cloth. In 1886, a Mr James Potter of Tuxedo Park, New York, was a houseguest at Sandringham. He consequently ordered a similar dinner jacket to Bertie's from Henry Poole & Co. It was this dinner jacket that Mr Potter wore at the Tuxedo Park Club inspiring numerous copies that fellow members wore as informal uniform for stag dinners. Thus the Tuxedo was born at Henry Poole & Co. It took only eight years for an accidental style to cross the Atlantic Ocean and soon became an American institution. Its humble, royal beginnings were soon forgotten when labelled the Tuxedo. Patrick McMurray is an Australian designer based in Perth and famous for his luxury silk ties Patrick collaborates with textile designers in England, China and Australia.
